1st Rule of Computing: If you don't want to retype it or you will miss it, if it disappears, BACK IT UP.
Keep in mind that if your Backup contains a damaged file or one that has been compromised by a virus or other malware your Backup may be of little or no value.
If you use E-mail, the Internet, a network of any type or share disks or media with anyone, you
need to protect your system from Viruses, Worms, Spyware, Adware Phishing and other assorted malware.
If you do not update your virus definition files daily you are not protected. For you fellow literalists, you need not update definitions on days you do not turn on your computer.

Using Microsoft Windows XP without Effective and Reliable Protection. is comparable to stepping out of a moving vehicle on the Interstate.
